About the two formats
BMP
BMP is Windows' original bitmap format: raw pixels with little or no compression. Files are enormous by modern standards and most websites reject them - but virtually every desktop program can open one.
PNG
PNG was designed as a lossless web format: it stores every pixel exactly and supports full transparency. That makes it the default choice for logos, icons, screenshots and any graphic with sharp edges or text.
When to convert BMP to PNG
- You need an exact, lossless copy of a BMP that is smaller
- The image is a graphic, logo or screenshot where sharpness matters
