What WebP is and why it took over

WebP is an image format Google released in 2010 with one blunt goal: make the web lighter. It grew out of the VP8 video codec, taking techniques video engineers had spent years refining and applying them to still images. Adoption crawled for a decade, then crossed the line that matters in 2020, when Safari added support and completed coverage across every major browser. Today WebP quietly serves a huge share of the images you see online, and most viewers never notice the switch.

The takeover is simple arithmetic. Images make up most of the weight of a typical web page, so a format that renders every image 25 to 35 percent smaller makes the entire web measurably faster, trims bandwidth costs and helps search rankings, since page speed feeds into how Google orders results. How WebP compression works

WebP's lossy mode behaves like a single frame of modern video. The encoder predicts each block of pixels from its already-encoded neighbors, then stores only the difference between the prediction and reality. Smooth, predictable regions such as sky, walls and skin cost almost nothing, so the format spends its bytes where real detail lives. JPG, designed almost two decades earlier, encodes every block independently and cannot share information between them. That prediction gap is where most of WebP's advantage comes from.

The table understates one point: WebP does not just match each competitor, it beats them on their home turf while adding the features they lack. The pattern repeats across content types. A flat-color logo that weighs 120 KB as PNG lands near 88 KB as lossless WebP. Animation is the most dramatic case: short GIF loops routinely shrink 60 to 80 percent when re-encoded as animated WebP, because GIF stores frames so inefficiently. Exact savings vary with content, but WebP winning is the norm, not the exception.

Browser and app support in 2026

Every current browser renders WebP natively: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera on desktop, plus all their mobile versions on Android and iOS. Support stopped being a web concern years ago, and you can serve WebP to any audience running software from this decade without fallbacks.

The friction that remains lives outside browsers. Some older desktop viewers, office suites and marketplace upload forms still refuse WebP files. Windows Photos and macOS Preview both open the format natively now, but the occasional legacy tool will balk. That is an argument for keeping originals around, not for avoiding the format.

What about AVIF, the newer codec that compresses even harder? It is real and growing, but encoder speed, tooling and app support still trail WebP by a wide margin. WebP is the safe default in 2026: universally supported, fast to encode and well understood. Adopt AVIF where you control the whole pipeline; use WebP everywhere else. If a site rejects your WebP file, convert it with WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG and submit that instead. Going the other way, PNG to WebP and JPG to WebP shrink your files for the web.

How to create WebP files

You likely have everything you need already. Photoshop, GIMP, Affinity Photo and most modern editors export WebP directly from the save dialog. Two settings deserve a warning because they trip people up. Quality 100 in lossy mode is not lossless; it is just very gentle lossy encoding, so pick the dedicated lossless mode when exact pixels matter. And higher effort settings trade encoding time for smaller output, which is worth it for batch jobs even when it would feel sluggish in an interactive tool.
