About the two formats
AVIF
AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, based on the AV1 video codec. It achieves the smallest files of any widely-supported format and handles HDR, transparency and animation - but older software cannot open it.
JPG
JPG (JPEG) has been the standard photo format since 1992. It compresses photographs to a fraction of their raw size by discarding detail the eye barely notices, which is why virtually every camera, phone and website uses it.
